AutoCAD is a native 3D-modeling software application that was designed to do more than just drafting. AutoCAD is intended for architects, engineers, designers, drafters, landscape designers, builders, students, hobbyists and anyone else who might use a CAD program to create models, drawings or electronic data that can be viewed on a computer screen.

Unlike a vector-graphics application, AutoCAD is the first drafting program designed from the ground up to allow users to create 3D objects using three-dimensional (3D) modeling tools. AutoCAD uses the term “3D” as a marketing term, even though the program does not create 3D drawings or 3D models; the term is used to differentiate the software from earlier, two-dimensional drafting programs. The term “3D” may be used to mean two-dimensional drawings or models, or to represent the object’s location relative to the CAD user’s display screen.

AutoCAD provides basic 2D drafting functions, such as line, arc, circle, polyline, and more. The drawing functions are displayed in an isometric view that lets users view a two-dimensional drawing in three dimensions. These tools are also available for 3D drafting.

The most common use for AutoCAD, however, is for creating two-dimensional drawings, including technical, architectural and planning drawings. A 2D drawing can be created from scratch, or by combining a variety of simple, geometric shapes (lines, polygons, arcs, circles, splines) into complex objects (compartments, technical drawings, mechanical drawings). If a user needs to create detailed mechanical drawings, they may import complex, 3D objects created using the “add object” tool, or they may import 2D objects from other CAD programs (such as FreeHand, CorelDRAW and FreeCAD), 3D software applications (such as SolidWorks, Rhinoceros, TinkerCAD, Cura, Protolabs and Solid Edge), and printed books (such as blueprints).

AutoCAD supports a wide range of geometric tools and drafting functions. For example, AutoCAD includes tools to create circle, line, arc

Formula objects were first introduced in AutoCAD R14. The first Formula that became available, named Formula1, is used for calculating costs and discounts when an item or order is created or edited. The Formula syntax is divided into two parts: the first part is the formula itself and the second part is how it is executed in the application. Formula is run by a series of commands:
OPEN_FORMULA. Used to open the formula sheet. The formula sheet contains all formulas, definitions, summations, and data which needs to be used in a form to the sheet.
CLONE_FORMULA. Used to clone a formula. A clone contains everything that is in a formula, and adds it to the clipboard.
PASTE_FORMULA. Used to paste a formula. A clone contains everything that is in a formula, and adds it to the clipboard.
COPY_FORMULA. Used to copy a formula to the clipboard.
FILL_SUMMATION. Used to place a summation. A summation is a value, which sums the values of two or more values.
FORMULA_END. Used to mark the end of the formula.
OPTION_SUMMATION. Used to select an option sum. A sum is a value, which sums the values of two or more values.
FORMULA_BEGIN. Used to mark the start of the formula.
FORMULA_END_VALUE. Used to assign a value to the end of the formula.
FORMULA_OPTION. Used to mark an option. An option is a value, which allows for the selection of different options.
FORMULA_CLOSE. Used to close a formula.
FORMULA_OPEN. Used to open a formula.
FORMULA_RESTART. Used to restart the Formula1 from the beginning.

The second part contains the actual commands used to execute the formula.
OPEN_FORMULA. Commands are specified as being one of the following:

APPEND – Adds a formula at the end of the list.
APPEND_IN_LINE – Adds a formula at the end of the current line.
CLOSE_FORMULA – Closes the formula.
CLEAR_FORMULA – Clears the formula.
COMMA_SEPARATE – Separates the data into different lines.
CLOSE – Closes the current line.

Good news for fans of dystopian fantasies: the BBC says it will air a new version of the original “Doctor Who” television series. But the news doesn’t have fans of George Orwell’s “1984” screaming “Big Brother is watching.”

The BBC is set to screen the first episode of the Doctor Who series for the first time since the series ended in 1989, in a version created specifically for the Internet and featuring younger actors and a new opening sequence. It will be aired at 10 p.m. May 31 on the BBC’s iPlayer Internet streaming platform.

A BBC spokeswoman said fans shouldn’t expect the screen version of the original Doctor Who TV series to resemble the one shown in the 1984 film. “What people are seeing will be very different,” she said. “It will be much darker and edgier.”

Instead, the Doctor Who series will feature new actors and will be directed by Peter Harness, an associate producer of the recent “Doctor Who” episode “The Girl in the Fireplace.”

“I’m hoping the darker tone will attract a lot of new people to the series,” Harness told the BBC.

The BBC has a history of producing the TV show to rival “1984” by the early 1980s, making an attempt to capture the look and feel of the dystopian novel. But when the show ended in 1989, the BBC was quickly criticized for its modern production. The BBC promised to try again to match the look of the “1984” film in the 1990s, but went back to regular TV production in the early 2000s.

The new version of the original “Doctor Who” series will be aired on the Internet only, as a way of attracting a younger audience. The BBC said it decided to release the new version for the Internet after fans complained online about the way “Doctor Who” was airing on television. BBC America is planning to air a one-hour movie version of the new “Doctor Who” series as part of a miniseries called “The Coming of the Cybermen.”

In an age of Internet video and other digital distribution, the BBC is keen to promote the new Doctor Who TV series as a way
